I am actually working from a beach thanks to GoToMyPc

GoToMyPC allows me to access my PC from anywhere on the Internet as though I were sitting in front of it. So when I am on vacation or just at a friend's house I can deal with urgent email and see if I've got any eBay or Amazon orders. Now what is wonderful about this is that I don't have the hassle of trying to load everything I think I'll need onto a laptop and then having all the subsequent problems of re-updating my main PC. GoToMyPC has allowed me to take working holidays and I love it. It's not cheap though so I'm amazed to see that www.logmein.com are offering a FREE remote login service, they hope you'll upgrade to their professional service of course. So there's nothing to stop you giving this a try. You can even use this on your home network to maintain other PCs without leaving your desk.

A reader Matt recommends the also free RealVNC which is widely used by the technical community, the only hassle with this is that an Internet Cafe etc might not allow you to install the RealVNC client.

Working from a holiday location

Hi,
Back home now; all in all my working away from home was a success, but once again confirmed that you are more vulnerable to disasters. It's obvious really at your home base you likely have spare cables, old monitors, you can't take all that with you. This time the not very old monitor just died, and a short piece of USB cable inexplicably failed. Luckily there was a PC shop not too far. Now I rely on a wonderful service called GOTOMYPC to remotely access my Home PC via the Internet. This means I have access to everything I need, all my data and programs. My remote PC just becomes a console. However after a few days of successful working the broadband connection to my home office, went down. So I had to painfully rebuild my applications on my vacation PC, I had just finished when BT kindly restored my broadband. I was also disappointed that I couldn't make myself get early so I could finish early, I'll have to work on that next year!

Working from the Beach
Hi,
Nearly everyone dreams of working and living in a holiday location, it should easy for me as an Internet based homeworker. The idea is that you go for a swim in the ocean before beginning your day.

I am trialling this life this summer vacation. There are a few difficulties: we are getting up very late, which throws off my plan of working like mad in the morning so that I can enjoy the late afternoon and evening. There are technical hitches as well, today my borrowed PC Monitor died, just like that. I've already replaced the mouse, and installed a virus checker. On the plus side I use a marvelous service called GOTOMYPC to remotely access my Home PC via the Internet. This means I have access to everything I need, all my data and programs. My remote PC just becomes a console. I use GOTOMYPC to access my PC from CyberCafes, friends' PCs etc, pick up my email, deal with any orders etc. Before I had GOTOMYPC I used to try and copy my files to a laptop, but always found I've forgotten something vital.

You can get a months free trial to GOTOMYPC by clicking here, it's essential for me as a home worker and allows me to blog you from the beach!
